This Is Us star Chrissy Metz has spoken about her weight struggles and insists she’s not going to ‘beat herself up’ over the food she eats.

You see, for her, living a healthier lifestyle is about making ‘progress’, rather than striving for ‘perfection’.

In a new interview with Good Housekeeping, Chrissy explained that rather than get mad about why she might be indulging in certain foods, she changes her perspective and tries to work out why she’s feeling the need to do so in the first place.

‘I’ve battled weight issues, but I realise that I don’t have to beat myself up if I have XYZ food. Instead, I change my perspective and think, “What is it that I’m angry about?” since we tend to want crunch foods when we’re angry or ice cream when we soothe ourselves.

‘All these things I’m just trying to be cognizant of.’

Using a metaphor to explain her new perspective, she said: ‘If a waiter takes a tray of food and a glass falls and the drink spills, they don’t just throw the entire tray on the ground… You get another cup of whatever you spilled and you keep going.’

Chrissy explained: ‘So often, if something isn’t perfect we go, “I quit!” That’s not conducive to forward progress, and it’s really about progress, not perfection.’

In This Is Us, Chrissy’s character Kate is seen struggling with her weight and the actress revealed that when she initially signed up for the show, there was a clause in her contract requiring her to lose weight along with her character.

‘That was a win-win for me,’ Chrissy said to TVLine back in 2016. ‘Because it’s one thing to try to do it on your own, but as human beings, it’s an ego thing. We’re more likely to do something for someone else.’

This is Us, which has been running since 2016, follows the lives and loves of the Pearson family, particularly Kevin, Kate and Randall.

Season 3 has just become available to watch in the UK and it was revealed last year that fans can expect many more seasons to come.

Show creator Dan Fogleman confirmed that a fourth, fifth and sixth series has already been picked up by NBC.
