Theresa May resigns: Nicola Sturgeon’s response ATTACKED by Ruth Davidson in Twitter spat

Mrs May announced she would be standing down in an emotional speech outside 10 Downing Street this morning. In a series of tweets after the Prime Minister’s resignation, Ms Sturgeon insisted there should be a general election when a new Tory leader is chosen. She said: “Given current circumstances, it also feels deeply wrong for another Tory to be installed in Number 10 without a general election.”

But Scottish Conservative leader Ms Davidson rounded on the SNP leader, who became Scottish First Minister without a Scottish Parliament election in 2014 after Alex Salmond quit.

The Tory replied: “But, obviously, fine for a First Minister to be ‘installed’ in Bute House without a Holyrood election. Eh, Nicola?”

In her tweets, Ms Sturgeon also claimed Brexit could only be solved by “putting the matter back to the people”.

And she repeated calls for a second Scottish independence referendum, following the 2014 vote.

Mrs May named June 7 as the date she will officially step down as Tory leader after a backlash against her latest Brexit deal.

She will stay on as Prime Minister until a replacement is appointed, which is expected to be by the end of July.

Leading Brexiteer Boris Johnson is currently the favourite for the top job.

He recently confirmed that he would be standing, telling a business event “of course I’m going to go for it”.
