There's an incredible global sleep out event happening to raise awareness for homelessness, here's how to get involved

Homelessness is fast becoming a major problem in the UK. According to housing charity, Shelter, 320,000 spend Christmas homeless and on the streets. Thankfully, there’s initiatives to help change that.

The World’s Big Sleep Out is a global event across 50 countries where people can voluntarily sleep out on the streets to raise their aim of $50 million.

Trafalgar Square is the London setting for the big sleep out on Saturday 7th December, but there will also be performers, such as Dame Helen Mirren, Travis, Tom Walker and Gang of Youths there. Registration for the sleep outs start from £15, and you can easily register online.

There haven’t been any location announcements for the rest of the UK, but there are sleep outs happening in Cardiff, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Brighton, Manchester and Dublin so stay tuned for more updates.

In Cardiff, there are a whole host of musical performers including Ruth Jones, Charlotte Church, Matthew Pritchard, Boy Azooga, Patrick Jones and more. Edinburgh has the likes of Gregor Fisher, Daniel Portman, Angie McMahon and the salvation army choir performing, so there’s definitely enough music to keep you going through the colder temperatures.

All of the money raised will go towards registered charities helping homeless and displaced people. 50% of the money raised will go to charities and rough sleepers in your town or city and 50% of the money will go towards helping the 70.1 million people that are globally displaced or homeless.

It’s a meaningful, accessible way of raising money, and we’re here for it. See you there.
