The two reasons Steven Gerrard will be sacked unless Rangers boss beats Celtic to title

Rangers boss Gerrard and his staff were widely praised for the players that were both brought in and kept in the summer transfer window.

As well as bringing in Joe Aribo and Ryan Kent, keeping hold of Alfredo Morelos was seen as a massive boost in their quest for silverware.

Beattie, who was released by Rangers as a schoolboy before joining their arch rivals Celtic, has warned Gerrard that he is now under intense pressure.

“Now that the window has closed, you can access everything properly now,” Craig Beattie told Clyde 1.

“The key question for Celtic and Rangers is: Have Rangers does enough at this moment in time to stop nine-in-a-row? And I think they have.

“They have not sold any of their better players.

“They have kept Morelos. [James] Tavernier is still there. [Scott] Arfield’s still there. And they have recruited.

“I think Steven Gerrard knows when the board have backed him, then with those kinds of signings he has to deliver the title or he will be ‘see you later, Steven and we will go and try something else’.

“There’s heaps of pressure. But Steven Gerrard’s not daft.

“With the backing he has had, he knows if he doesn’t win the title he will do well to survive in his job.”

Rangers started the season brilliantly but were handed a reality check in the form of a 2-0 home defeat to Celtic before the international break.

Gerrard, who failed to win a trophy in his first season as boss, revealed his disappointment after the clash as the Light Blues plot to bring to an end the Hoops’ eight-year Premiership dominance.

He said: “To win these games you need to win more one on ones than the opposition across the board.

“I don’t think Celtic outplayed us today, they were just effective in their game plan, they pressed us hard and we couldn’t handle the direct play which is unusual for us because normally I can trust out centre backs to win anything that comes in direct.

“It’s a tough one for us to take but I know why we haven’t won the game and it’s because across the board we weren’t good enough.

“In hindsight, you go back to the team you’ve picked and your game plan so I’ll certainly analyse myself but I don’t want to stand here and pass all of the blame on to the dressing room.”
