The Simpsons Movie sequel will happen if they have a ‘great story’ but it’s in ‘very early stages’

It’s hard to believe it’s been 13 whole years since The Simpsons Movie was released, but the sequel is still not much closer to starting production.

Despite calls from fans for another movie to follow up on the 2007 hit, it looks like it could be a few more years until work starts in earnest.

Producer Al Jean told Slash Film: ‘[It’s] in the very, very early stages. We would love to do one for Disney but it’s not like it’s happening next week or next year.

‘At D23 Matt [Groening] said, “I think it’s gonna happen” and I agree with that. So I agree with that statement. I believe it will happen.’

When asked whether a sequel would be easier to write, Al added: ‘It’s never easier, this I’m sure of. We would only do it if it was an idea that we thought deserved being made into another movie.

We certainly don’t need to have more Simpsons out there just for the money or to have additional material. We would do it if we thought it was a great story and we wanted to tell it.’

Al also confirmed that any follow up to the Simpsons Movie would be a standalone story rather than a sequel to the first one.

The 2007 movie made an enormous $527.1 million (£405.3 million) at the global box office, and even featured cameos from Green Day and Tom Hanks alongside the usual voice cast.

First rumours of a potential sequel began in 2014, when James L. Brooks revealed that Fox had approached him for a sequel, but said: ‘We’ve been asked to [develop it], but we haven’t. We’re doing a lot of other stuff.’

In August 2018 it was reported that a sequel was in development, though as of 2020, there hasn’t been much movement on getting a storyline nailed down or production underway.
