The obscure beauty treatments you’ll be booking in 2020

Hair and beauty bookings site Treatwell has revealed its annual trend report in which it details the treatments which are gaining popularity among its users and those which are cooling down based on real bookings made via the app during 2019.

First, what’s not so hot? Hair extensions and HD Brows, apparently, as bookings fell 14 per cent and 9 per cent respectively for each treatment.

Meanwhile the report confirmed some things we already knew, that brow lamination and sugaring are likely to be firmly on the agenda next year, but threw up a few surprises of some more obscure treatments which are apparently on the rise.

Keep reading for what’s hot in beauty and wellness, according to the bookings app.

Tooth gems

OK, so this trend might be more of a Gen Z thing, but according to the app, bookings for tooth jewellery treatments are up a huge 971 per cent, while regular piercings are up by 40 per cent.

The jury’s still out for us but we have to admit Adwoa makes it look kind of cool.

Russian lashes

Unsurprisingly eye lash bookings were up 36 per cent in the last year, read our guide on the best places in London to get them done here, but a more extreme version is on the rise. According to the app, bookings for Russian Lashes are up 794 per cent in the last year.

Russian lashes is a technique whereby between two and eight artificial lashes are added to each natural lash, they’re thinner than regular lashes and are supposed to last as long as two months, double what you usually get. But the trend is definitely for those wanting the va va voom effect.

Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning, an exfoliation skin treatment which buffs off the top layer of dead skill cells as well as unwanted peach fuzz (facial hair), saw an increase in bookings of 621 per cent year on year, according to Treatwell. It is used in facial treatments to help products penetrate deeper into the dermis.

Brow lamination

We told you back in the summer that brow lamination was set to become a thing, and we were right – according to Treatwell, bookings for the service are up some 465 per cent in the last year.

The semi-permanent grooming trend, also hailing from Russia, involves straightening your eyebrow hairs using a solution so that they appear bushier, fluffier and fuller, leaving you with an off-duty supermodel look which lasts up to about a month.

Sugaring

Another trend that we were loving this summer, sugaring saw an increase of 91 per cent in bookings on the app year-on-year. The organic hair removal technique, thought to have originated in Egyptian times, is having a revival among clean beauty lovers.

The method involves using a paste made of just three ingredients – sugar, water and lemon, -and is free from plastic and synthetics. People also say it hurts less and lasts longer than a regular wax.

Cryotherapy

Finally, cryotherapy was also gaining traction among Treatwell customers, with bookings up 41 per cent. The process involves standing in a freezing chamber or room for up to several minutes. The cold blast is thought to boost the body’s immune system, promote muscle healing and reduced aches and pains, among other things.
