The jobs you can apply for to earn extra cash or get work during coronavirus outbreak


AMAZON, Asda, Aldi, Lidl, Deliveroo and Tesco are just some of the companies hiring new workers as coronavirus sweeps the UK.

In total, there are over 50,000 new jobs available that could help you bridge the gap if you’re worried about your finances.

It comes as cases of the virus, also known as COVID-19, have jumped to 3,983 in the UK with 177 deaths reported at the time of writing.

Supermarkets and online delivery services have been exceptionally busy during the coronavirus outbreak, forcing stores to limit the amount of products each customer can buy.

Meanwhile, supermarket delivery slots have been selling out at a faster rate than usual, with shoppers describing the delays as “worse than Christmas”.

Tesco has announced that it is hiring 20,000 new staff to meet the coronavirus panic-buying demand.

And Morrisons says it is creating 3,500 jobs to help expand home deliveries to get groceries to vulnerable people.

Online retail giant Amazon is also hiring in the UK, as are food delivery services like Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats.

Self-employed and contract workers are reporting financial worries because of lost work as the virus continues to spread.

And some firms have also made huge numbers of staff redundant as they struggle to cope with the impacts of staff and customers self-isolating.

Here we round up all the new jobs that are being advertised to help people who need extra work.

Which companies creating new jobs?

The following companies have announced that they are boosting staff numbers to cope with extra demand from the coronavirus spread.

  • Aldi: The discounter has created 5,000 new temporary jobs and has 4,000 permanent vacancies currently available across all parts of it business.
    Permanent roles include in stores, head office and logistics, while the temporary jobs will be in stores and distribution centres with an immediate start date.
    It says that temporary roles could become permanent.
    The majority of jobs have been posted onto LinkedIn. You can also apply for jobs at Aldi via its recruitment website.
  • Amazon: Amazon is looking for delivery drivers and operations specialists across several parts of the UK.
    These are also being posted onto LinkedIn, as well as jobs site Jora UK.
    On average, Amazon delivery drivers earn around £9.50 an hour. A full list of job roles can be seen here.
  • Asda: Asda is taking on 5,000 temporary employees – workers will be offered shifts or temporary roles.
    Current employees are being encouraged to recruit people on social media, as well as friends and family.
    There are vacancies across different parts of the country and can be seen on jobs site Get Your Vacancy.

  • Deliveroo: Deliveroo is advertising for food delivery drivers across the UK.
    According to the company, drivers typically earn around £10 an hour.

  • Iceland: Iceland is looking for retail assistants and store managers.
    If you’re interested, you can apply via LinkedIn or browse more jobs here.
    The supermarket typically pays £9.10 per hour for sales assistants depending on where your store is based.
  • Just Eat: In the past day, Just Eat has posted dozens of job advertisements for food delivery drivers and bikers.
    You can find out more information on LinkedIn or see the full range of jobs here.
    On average, Just Eat delivery drivers are reported to earn £120 a day, according to jobs site Indeed.
  • Lidl: Lidl has said it will create about 2,500 temporary jobs across its 800 stores in the UK.
    The majority of these must be applied to via LinkedIn – more information can be found here.
    Lidl typically pays workers £9.30 per hour.
  • M&S: M&S has not yet said whether it will be creating any new jobs, and there are fears some of its clothing stores could shut.
    But the food halls may need some extra staff.
    The supermarket is looking for new employees across several locations across the UK. More information can be found here.
    M&S workers usually earn between £8.50 and £10.60 per hour.
  • Morrisons: Morrisons has announced that it will create 3,500 new jobs to expand its home delivery services.
    In addition to around 2,500 pickers and drivers to expand home delivery, Morrisons will be recruiting around 1,000 people to work in the company’s distribution centres.The vacancies will be advertised through a campaign on radio and social media and the Morrisons jobs website morrisons.jobs.On average, Morrisons workers make around £9.13 an hour.
  • Ocado: Ocado is looking for delivery drivers and operations managers, with roles in various locations across the UK. You can apply on LinkedIn or find more jobs here. Ocado delivery drivers earn around £8.43 an hour, according to Indeed.
  • Sainsbury’s: The supermarket has not yet announced any job creation because of coronavirus.
    But there are delivery driver roles being advertised at the moment.

    According to Indeed, Sainsbury’s delivery drivers earn around £9 an hour.
  • Tesco: Tesco has announced that it is creating a whopping 20,000 new jobs including delivery drivers and shop assistants.
    Tesco workers earn an average of £9.30 an hour. The roles are temporary, but the supermarket says some could become permanent.

  • Uber Eats: Jobs are being advertised for delivery driver roles at Uber Eats.
    Most of these need to applied for through AppJobs or on the UberEats website – find out more here.
    Uber Eats offers no guaranteed minimum income but drivers are thought to earn around £11.14 per trip, according to Alvia.
  • Waitrose: Waitrose is looking for supermarket assistants in various departments and stores in the UK.
    These are being advertised on Glassdoor and LinkedIn – find out more here.
    Waitrose employees can expect to earn £9.35 an hour.

How do I write a CV and cover letter?

Your CV is the first opportunity you get to stand out to a new employer, so you need to make sure it shows the best of your abilities and achievements.

At a very basic level, it needs to have your personal information – name, address and contact information.

You should also include your current job title, qualifications and education.

What to use to help you write your CV

  • Grammarly: It’s important to get your spelling and grammar accurate, so run your CV through a tool such as Grammarly to check for any errors. It’s free to download straight to your desktop.
  • Vizualize.me: If you’ve got an exisiting LinkedIn account, Vizualize.me takes the data and turns it into a timeline of your employment history and a breakdown of your skills. The free tool has six different themes so it’s a good option to make your CV look visually appealing as well.
  • VisualCV: As well as making your CV look eye catching, VisualCV also makes sure it can be read by electronic systems that some recruiters use to filter CVs. It’s also free to sign up.
  • Google Docs: Google Docs is completely free to use and offers a range of downloadable CV templates for you to choose from.

When it comes to your cover letter, jobs site Reed.co.uk says you should focus on covering these points:

    • Why are you getting in touch?
  • Why are you suitable for the job?
  • What can you do for the company?

Keep your cover letter clear and precise – ideally around half a side of A4 paper.
