The Handmaid’s Tale season five could be an eventful watch for fans after the book the show is based off of now has a sequel named The Testaments.
Margaret Atwood released the latest edition yesterday, which is set over a decade after the events that took place on the Hulu show.
Whilst promoting the new book, the author let slip the huge spoiler that Gilead will be destroyed.
The show is known for it’s diversions from the original plot, but could they ignore such a huge bombshell?
In an interview with Weekend Edition Saturday, the author revealed: “As we knew from Book One, Gilead does end.”
Moreover, Margarat teased a double agent twist as someone could destroy Gilead from the inside.
She added: “So it may not surprise you to know that I was pretty interested in double agents and people working from inside totalitarian regimes, against those regimes, when I was writing this book,” she said.
Who could be the one to take down the regime?
The first season of The Handmaid’s Tale ended with the last chapter of the book.
However, as the second and third outings went in their own directions, the author and showrunners stayed in close contact to ensure paths did not conflict.

The book’s sequel is told from a different perspective, as the focus shifts from June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) to the downfall of Gilead and the perspective is told from three female narrators.
There have been a number fan theories surrounding the next outing of the TV adaptation, including the speculation that the show will take another female lead in the place of June, leaving her fate a mystery for the first few episodes.
If the show was to follow suit of the original sequel, the next outing will be told from Aunt Lydia’s (Ann Dowd) perspective.
Moreover, will the next outing also feature a ten year time jump?
The book sees the story told by June’s now grown up daughters Nichole and Hannah Bankole (Jordana Blake).
Could there be new cast members added to see a futuristic takedown of Gilead?
Meanwhile, fans are theorising how June and her daughter Hannah will reunite.
Reddit user laurenonfire speculates Canada could try to get access to extradite June as a witness to Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) and Fred Waterford’s (Joseph Fiennes) “crimes against humanity” due to her firsthand knowledge of events that took place last season.
the user theorised: “Gilead would use Hannah as bait to make sure she testifies appropriately.”
