The Goonies 2: Steven Spielberg speaks out on SEQUEL ideas at 35th anniversary reunion

This year marks the 35th anniversary of The Goonies, the classic coming-of-age treasure hunting adventure. And now Josh Gad has managed to reunite the cast, director Richard Donner, screenwriter Christopher Columbus, soundtrack singer Cyndi Lauper and even Steven Spielberg himself for a special reunion for charity over a Zoom call. The actor presented what is episode one of Reunited Apart, in aid of The Centre for Disaster Philanthropy.

The cast and crew have a lot of fun sharing memories and re-enacting moments during the reunion.

But everything became particularly exciting when Spielberg finally showed up.

The legendary filmmaker came up with the story for The Goonies and produced the movie.

Then Gad asked the inevitable question: “What is it going to take for you guys to make a Goonies sequel?”

Feldman’s post read: “#GOONIE DINNER! HERE I AM LAST NITE CATCHING UP W FORMER CAST M8S, @seanastin & Jonathan Ke Quan. #LOVELY #NEVERSAYDIE #30thanniversary.”

While in 2017, he was asked about the possibility of a sequel.

He told MovieWeb at the time: “Richard Donner [the director] is 87 years old.

“And it’s like, no one really wants to make it without him.”

He added: “He’s the driving force behind it. He says it’s still alive.

“But as we all know…When you get to that age, things slow down quite a bit.”

“There is a big possibility that he might not want to keep driving it. So, I think without him, it doesn’t happen.

“And every day that passes, that he doesn’t do it, there is less and less chance that it is ever going to happen at all.”
