The Duchess of Cambridge’s go-to brand Beulah London faces financial difficulties

As well as being a sartorial trailblazer, the Duchess of Cambridge is also loyal to a handful of fashion brands.

A proven champion of British brands from Alexander McQueen to LK Bennett, mother-of-three Kate knows a stand-out label when she sees it.

Over the years, most recently back in May, she has also championed ethical label Beulah London, which was founded in 2010 by her friends, Lady Natasha Rufus Isaacs and Lavinia Brennan.

But now the London-based label appears to be in financial difficulty. According to The Times, the largest financial backer of Beulah London, American philanthropist Mary Demetree, is threatening legal action against Rufus Isaacs and Brennan.

Demetree stands to lose the £400,000 she lent to the label after it appointed business advisory firm Quantuma to enter voluntary liquidation on July 9. It’s estimated that creditors are owed almost £1million.

Beulah built its brand on social conscience, selling clothes made by Indian and Bangladeshi workers receiving fair wages, but by 2018 had amassed losses of £1.7 million.

“As with any other liquidation, we have run an open process for the sale of the assets of Beulah, appointing an independent firm of agents to publicly advertise for prospective purchasers,” a spokesperson for Quantuma told the Standard. “A number of bids were received during the process, and we have accepted the highest, as this represents the best outcome for both the Company and its creditors. A sale of the assets was concluded on Friday 7th August. The joint liquidators will continue to fulfil their statutory duties relating to the liquidation.”

The Duchess of Cambridge first wore the brand in 2011 to the 100 Women gala.

The Standard has contacted Beulah London for comment.
