The Chase: 'Are you even awake?' Viewers puzzled by Shaun Wallace performance

Chaser Shaun Wallace, who is also known as the Dark Destroyer, had a “very poor day at the office” on popular quiz show The Chase today.

The impressive chaser managed to knock out players one and two with swift success in the middle rounds, but when the game reached the final the barrister had lost his advantage.

Faced with beating player three Neil and player four Catherine, Shaun noted he never gets complacent when it comes to winning the ITV show.

But despite the quizzer’s genius abilities with trivia games, when the contestants managed to rack up 18 correct answers he was in trouble.

Shaun managed to get a couple of correct answers in a row, but things rapidly began to fall apart for the show’s star.

In the end, he gave the remaining two players seven pushback, of which they executed four.

This is a massive amount for any episode, but sometimes when the chasers get a string of bad luck the nerves take over.

As the nail-biting two minutes came to a close, the contestants were bowled over to realise they’d managed to win their £8,000 prize money, which split between two is £4,000.

A delighted Neil revealed he was going to spend the money on his children, while Catherine was planning on a trip to Australia to visit her brother, niece and nephew with her mother Pat.

A downcast Shaun shared: “The Big C caught me, I should have known that. That was a poor day at the office.”

Disappointed with his performance, viewers flocked to Twitter to comment on unexpected twist.

“Well done team, anything over 15 is a challenge for Shaun nowadays, he is the weakest by far #TheChase,” one person posted.

Another wrote: “The Chaser’s having a bad day #TheChase.”

“Dark Destroyer is the weakest link out of the chasers but he is the best to watch #TheChase,” a third said.

While a fourth noted: “Dark Destroyer should retire. #TheChase.”

A fifth shared: “I really think Shaun isn’t a great chaser, if you go up against him you have a good chance of winning, especially at 18! #thechase.”

Fans continued to discuss the outcome, with one person saying: “He’s not going very fast, is he? #TheChase #GangOfChase #Sonic.”

“Ohh, the chaser losing it a bit today!! A ‘Bad Day At The Office’!! #TheChase,” another exclaimed.

And a third even joked: “Shaun are you even awake? #TheChase.”

All the chasers have bad days, and on this occasion, it was good news for an elated Catherine and Neil.

The Chase continues weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
