The beautiful UK town that's 'no ordinary market town' and one of happiest places to live


Choosing where to live is based on a number of factors, with where you work and where friends and family live often being the priorities.

Where you live can also play a huge role in your overall happiness and wellbeing.

A survey conducted in 2023 by real estate agents Rightmove actually revealed how people living in different towns in the UK experience varying levels of happiness and life satisfaction.

The 12th annual Happy at Home Index, published in December, showed exactly which areas of the nation have the happiest residents.

More than 26,000 people took part in the survey, which considered 13 happiness factors including things like community spirit and green spaces.

Following the results, Rightmove compiled a list of the 20 happiest places in the UK.

Ranking number 14 on the list was a beautiful market town situated in the middle of two national parks – Kendal in Cumbria.

Online community for the over 50s, Rest Less, described Kendal as a blend of town and country.

It said: “Often called the ‘Gateway to the Lakes’, Kendal offers the luxury of bordering not one but two of the UK’s most magnificent national parks – the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.

“And the town’s sloping streets mean that views of lush green meadows are never far away.

“There’s plenty to do here all year round; whether you decide to browse the market and boutique shops or explore Kendals’ rich history that dates back to Roman times with a visit to some of the area’s fantastic museums, castles, and gardens.

“Kendal also benefits from fantastic road and rail links that make commuting close by and further afield easy.

“The crime rate here is slightly higher than the rest of Cumbria, but sits below the national average.”

According to Rightmove, properties in Kendal had an overall average price of £272,565 over the last year.

The majority of sales in Kendal during the last year were terraced properties, selling for an average price of £258,043.

Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £265,812, with flats fetching £154,316.

Kendal also has plenty to offer tourists, Visit Kendal says.

“We think Kendal will surprise you – our streets are alive,” it adds.

“We are no ordinary market town. Kendal is beautiful inside and out – we can’t wait to show you around.”

For those who love history, Kendal Castle and the town’s museum makes for the perfect day out.

The town also boasts multiple restaurants, cafes and pubs for keen foodies.

And its location makes Kendal the ideal base for hikers looking to explore both the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales.
