The Batman casts Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon alongside Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz and Paul Dano

The Batman director Matt Reeves has announced yet another cast member, with Jeffrey Wright coming aboard to play Jim Gordon.

Reeves, 53, shared a GIF from a 2018 video Wright, 53, made for HBO and The Atlantic, where at one point he said, ‘Tweet something.’

Wright himself hasn’t responded publicly to the casting announcement, but he’s just the latest high-profile star to join the increasingly diverse cast of The Batman.

Wright was first linked to the Jim Gordon role back in mid-September, when The Hollywood Reporter revealed that he was in talks for the role.

That report also revealed that Jonah Hill was in early talks to play a villain role, rumored to be either The Penguin or The Riddler.

However, it was reported by Variety in mid-October that Hill passed on the role in mid-October, though now Reeves has confirmed Wright as Gordon.

Wright will become the first black actor to play Commissioner Gordon, a character who debuted in the comics back in 1939.

Neil Hamilton played Commissioner Gordon in the original 1966 Batman series, with Pat Hingle playing Gordon in the early Batman movies, 1989’s Batman, 1992’s Batman Returns, 1995’s Batman Forever and 1997’s Batman and Robin.

Gary Oldman played Gordon in director Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, 2005’s Batman Begins, 2008’s The Dark Knight and 2012’s The Dark Knight Returns.

The last actor to play Commissioner Gordon, the Gotham police leader and key ally to Bruce Wayne/Batman, was J.K. Simmons in 2017’s Justice League.

Reeves joins Robert Pattison, who signed on in May to play Bruce Wayne/Batman, Zoe Kravitz, who was cast two weeks ago as Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Paul Dano, who signed on two weeks ago to play Edward Nashton/The Riddler.

There is no word yet on which character will be cast next for The Batman, which is slated for release on June 25, 2021 and will start filming sometime next year.
