Taylor Swift’s cinematographer explains how Cardigan video was shot in lockdown as Folklore tops charts

Taylor Swift’s cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto has detailed how the pair made the magical video for new single Cardigan during coronavirus-induced lockdown.

T-Swift wrote and directed the rustic video, which serves as a teaser for the themes of her hit new album Folklore – which debuted at number one in the charts.

The clip sees Taylor playing a piano in a candlelit cabin, a beautiful forest and on choppy seas.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Prieto explained: ‘She had the whole storyline, the whole notion of going into the piano and coming out into the forest, the water, going back into the piano.’

‘We needed to be safe, for her sake and for our sake as a crew during the shoot, but also for the future of filmmaking.

‘Because we want to keep working and doing what we do, and if, God forbid, someone got sick on one of the first jobs that was filmed, it would probably close down [the industry].’

Good point.

The pair previously collaborated on the video for Taylor’s song The Man.

Folklore was released last Friday to critical acclaim and has sold over two million copies worldwide in the space of a week.

It was recently reported that even The Look What You Made Me Do singer’s record label were unaware of Folklore’s existence until shorty before its release.

Aaron Dessner from the band The National, who worked with Taylor on the album, told Pitchfork: ‘There was no outside influence at all.

‘In fact, nobody knew, including her label, until hours before it was launched.

‘For someone who’s been in this glaring spotlight for 15 years, it’s really liberating to have some privacy and work on her own terms. She deserves that.’
