The second instalment of T.I. on Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk has dropped, and he and his wife Tiny spoke out about how they got back from the brink of divorce, twice.
The couple have been together for almost 20 years, having been married since 2010, but admitted they have been through the rough with the smooth.
T.I., 39, whose real name is Clifford Joseph Harris Jr., previously said marriage causes a man’s ‘masculinity to die’ during one of their splits.
The couple spoke about their splits – and alleged infidelity, with T.I. saying: ‘I believe at the very time that that came out, my calls were blocked. I had no access to get to you and I had been relieved of duty as the person who was responsible to be on site attending to [Tiny’s] needs, and I’d been relieved of duty so I can’t play both positions.’
Tiny – real name Tameka Cottle – then hit back: ‘Well, of course you have. You’ve been out with women all on the ‘Gram, so you relieved yourself of…’
T.I. then replied: ‘We were both enjoying ourselves.’
While Tiny denied she had ever been with anyone else while they were married, she admitted: ‘We’ve both been out there a little bit, mine’s not as extensive as yours but it’s ok.’
Tiny had filed for divorce twice, and the shift in power within their relationship was the catalyst for one of their breaks.
T.I. explained: ‘This is something we go back and forth about all the time. The second time I got out of prison… our relationship from 19 years ago was built on, I guess the principles or practise of us being together all the time.
‘We were a huge part of each others lives. When I went to prison, I guess she felt like “I have to figure out what I’m going to do because I don’t have you here to continue the protocols and the practises that we have established in the fundamental stages of this relationship”.
‘So when I got back, the world was upside down, she kind of had an air like “pfft it’s my time”, you know what I’m saying? I thought we were going to hit the ground running and get back to things being the way they were and that was an acclimation period that I had to make it through.
‘And me just coming back and not being in the position I was in, it left me feeling lesser than.
‘So I had to go figure out ways to make myself feel proper and adequate again. And that led to things that led to things, that led to things…’
Tiny added: ‘What he’s trying to say is that I went and I found my own voice and he was used to saying “ok, no we’re doing this and we’re moving this way” and I’d be like ok.
‘But when he came home he’d say we’re moving this way and I’d be like no, I’ve got this to do. It wasn’t what he was used to.
‘He was used to controlling things and having things his way at all time, but once I got on my own two feet, I felt like I should have a voice too. And that voice was a little different to what he was used to. So that, to me, is what caused the issue.’
Jada added that she and Will Smith had gone through the ‘exact same thing, where she felt like she lost a lot of herself while trying to support his career.
T.I. – who hit the headlines recently over comments he made about taking his daughter to the gynaecologist to have her virginity and hymen checked – also slammed claims he was controlling.
He explained: ‘If a man can’t provide for his family, he’s less of a man. But if a man provides everything, he’s controlling.’
Despite their problems, the couple retracted both divorce petitions and have worked through their issues.
