Warrington beat Wigan for the second time in 13 days as they closed the gap to Super League leaders St Helens to four points with victory at Anfield.

After Zak Hardaker kicked Warriors ahead, Declan Patton converted his own try to put the Wire into the lead.

Wigan broke back through Joe Burgess but Blake Austin re-established Warrington’s six-point advantage after Hardaker had kicked Wigan level.

Toby King crossed to secure the win, before Willie Isa’s late consolation.

King ran fully 65 metres to touch down following a Warrington interception.

Victory at Magic Weekend means the Wire remain second but are now within two wins of Saints, who play Castleford Tigers on Sunday.

Adrian Lam’s Wigan slip to their third defeat in a row, meanwhile, as they struggled to match Warrington in an end-to-end second half.

Wigan defeated Warrington in last season’s Super League Grand Final but have struggled for form so far this campaign and were well beaten by Catalans at Barcelona’s Nou Camp coming into the fixture.

Price’s Warrington had won both previous meetings between the sides, with the two victories coming at home – in Super League on 15 March and again in the Challenge Cup on 12 May.

Warrington registered the first try of the match in some style as Tom Lineham chipped in the final third for Patton to respond and ground the ball.

The Cherry and Whites missed the opportunity to level the scores at 8-8 after Burgess’ try, as Hardaker directed his conversion attempt wide, but he later kicked a successful penalty goal to bring Wigan to parity.

However, despite Isa’s try Wigan could not inspire a turnaround as Warrington eased to victory.
