A hat-trick from Jodie Broughton helped Catalans ease to victory over Wakefield and end a run of five defeats.

Broughton opened the scoring before efforts from Matt Whitley and Samisoni Langi added to the home side’s lead.

Reece Lyne crossed for the visitors but Broughton went over for his second to make it 20-6 at the break.

Broughton, playing for just the second time this season, completed his treble before Kenny Edwards and Tony Gigot (two) tries rounded off the win.

The home side moved back up to fifth with victory over a Wakefield side who scored the game’s final try through Bill Tupou, but who have now lost six of their past seven matches.

The hat-trick will feel especially sweet for Broughton, who made his first appearance in almost a year in the defeat at Leeds Rhinos last week after suffering anterior cruciate ligament and biceps injuries.

With France still in the midst of a heatwave that saw the country record its all-time hottest temperature last week, the referee in Perpignan stopped play midway through each half to allow players to take a drinks break.

Catalans visit Huddersfield next Friday, while Wakefield face local rivals Castleford on the same night.
