Fans of Suits loved the blossoming relationship between Rachel Zane (played by Meghan Markle) and Mike Ross (Patrick J Adams) in the popular legal drama. As a result, many were sad to see her leave in season seven after being such a key character. However, not many know that while much of the storyline came from showrunner Aaron Korsh’s experience on Wall Street, the Duchess of Sussex did have some influences on her character. Express.co.uk has rounded up some of the key ways she inspired the writers.
1. Meghan inspired Rachel’s love of food.
Throughout the show, fans will remember that Rachel had a soft spot for food and fine dining.
But Meghan actually revealed to Marie Claire back in 2013 that this was inspired by her own love of food.
She told the publication: “My character is a foodie because they know that I’m a foodie. I’m always on the quest to find amazing new restaurants and new recipes.”
“I’m a California girl, right? I grew up with that farm-to-table dining before it was sweeping the nation.
“I do think there’s some value to really throwing yourself into food and embracing where it comes from.”
This also inspired Meghan to take her her Vitamix food processor wherever she went for filming, according to a 2013 interview with Esquire.
2. Meghan wore her own jewellery on the show
Much of the jewellery fans saw Rachel wear on the show was actually her own.
According to the former actor’s interview with Marie Claire, the main pieces she wore were all hers.
She explained: “All the jewellery that I wear on the show is my own personal jewellery and family heirlooms, like my grandma’s charm bracelet and my signet ring.”
Given the Royal Family member has now gone on to launch her own clothing line, she clearly has great taste.
3. Meghan’s attributes are very similar to Rachel’s
In the same 2013 interview with Marie Claire, Meghan also revealed that she and her character were very similar.
She told the publication: “Rachel and I are very similar: ambitious, driven, and always trying to take the bull by its horns.”
She also added: “Maybe that’s where I’m similar to Rachel, in that I’m harder on myself than anyone else might be.”
While this did not inspire her character per se, it seems to have definitely helped her relate to the role.
4. Meghan’s route into royal life inspired her exit
When Meghan began dating Prince Harry, the team behind the show started thinking about how she would leave the show.
Showrunner Korsh reportedly told the BBC Radio 4 Today show the Suits writers made the decision before speaking to Meghan.
He said: “I didn’t want to intrude, so I didn’t want to ask, ‘Hey, what’s going on? What are you going to do?’

“So the writers decided, collectively, to take a gamble that these two people were in love and it was going to work out.
“As the season progressed, I said I would rather have good things happening to Meghan in her life, which would likely mean her leaving the show, so let’s plan on that.”
Fans will remember she left in season seven along with Mike as they apparently moved to Seattle to work in a legal firm there.
