Hot off the heels of Fast & Furious: Hobbs and Shaw, Idris Elba is getting stuck into another project, this time with Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin called Concrete Cowboys.

Production for the feature film has begun, which will also star Emmy nominated star Jharrel Jerome, Lorraine Toussaint (The Village) and Byron Bowers (The Chi).

McLaughlin will play a teenager who is taken to live with his estranged father, played by Elba, in North Philadelphia, and the film will look at the real-life Fletcher Street Stables.

It is there he discovers a rich urban cowboy subculture, thriving despite the low socio-economic nature of the area giving rise to violence and poverty, Deadline reports.

The film is based on the Fletcher Street Urban Riding club, a grassroots institution that has existed in the state for over 100 years of caring for horses, as well as teaching neighbourhood youth how to do the same.

Concrete Cowboys will be directed by Ricky Staub based on a screenplay he wrote with Dan Walser. It will be his directorial debit after his short film The Cage, about Philadelphia, was critically received.

Elba is producing the film alongside Lee Daniels Entertainment Tucker Tooley (who is financing the film, as well as Walser, Jennifer Madelof and Jeff Waxman, and Jennifer Madeloff.

Idris Elba has been having the time of his life as part of a trio of the best Hollywood action men made up of Hobbs & Shaw co-stars Jason Statham and The Rock.

Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert over in the US, Idris confessed he became the butt of many jokes between Johnson and Statham. Idris said: ‘When I was working on Hobbs & Shaw, just after that I went to work on Cats.

‘So I’m working with Dwayne and Jason and as soon as they found out I was working on Cats, this was their favourite thing to do as I walked on set.

‘We’re doing this big fight scene, I’m walking in looking all bravado and they’re like, “Hey Idris, what are you doing next?” And the crew would be like, “Yeah, what are you doing next?” And I would be like, “… Cats.’
