Stormzy tells doubters he's on the Glastonbury bill "because I'm a serious musician"

The ‘Big For Your Boots’ hitmaker will headline the Pyramid Stage at this year’s festival

In less than two months, Stormzy will be headlining the Pyramid Stage on the Friday night at Glastonbury and he’s putting on notice those who doubt his worthiness of the slot.

Performing on a bill that also sees The Cure and The Killers headline, many have questioned whether or not Stormzy deserves to be a headliner being that he’s only has one studio album.

“There were so many doubters being like, ‘Oh he hasn’t got no number one song’ or, ‘Oh he’s got one album out, he’s not ready’,” he said in an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Dotty. “I’m there because I’m a serious musician.”

Reassuring festival-goers that they’re not going to be let down with his performance, he continued: “If you think I got booked for Glastonbury headline to come there and not give you an iconic headline performance, you’ve gone crazy.”

While Stormzy was on the show to promote new single ‘Vossi Bop’, he also revealed that he’s got a follow-up album to his Brit Award-winning ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’ on the way.

“It’s about showing everyone again,” he explained. “I think that’s what music is.

“It’s about continuously showing people – body of work after body of work, single after single, release after release, piece of music after piece of music, live performance after live performance – that you are exactly who you are meant to be and exactly where you should be.”

While not announcing a release date for his next project, he did have a message for those thinking of underestimating him and his new music. “I’ve never come here to play games. As a musician, I take that so seriously,” he said. “As a man I’m very light-hearted. I love a joke and all that, but when it comes to music I say bruv I’ve never ever, ever played around – ever.

“This time around I’m more hell bent than ever in setting that tone in terms of… I’m there because I am a serious musician. I’m kind of done talking. There’s a build-up and this time round I’m ready… I got the album and we are going to show the world… exactly why I managed to get here in my career.”

Meanwhile, Stormzy recently revealed that he sought the advice of Adele , Ed Sheeran and Coldplay ahead of headlining Glastonbury this summer.

Stormzy told Kiss Breakfast: “This is a real name-drop: I have spoken to Ed about it, and Chris Martin. And Adele, right.

“I think that’s a massive blessing, even to mention those people. These are my friends now, and they’re all of course former Glastonbury headliners.
