Steven Spielberg is bringing back Amazing Stories for Apple TV+.

Amazing Stories, a series based on the sci-fi magazine Spielberg used to read as a child, originally ran for 45 episodes in the 80s.

His project will come as a surprise to many as Spielberg previously campaigned against streaming of films.

While Amazing Stories is a series and not a film, his decision to join Apple after clashing with Netflix is eyebrow-raising.

The director spoke at Apple’s event on Monday at the company’s California headquarters.

He popped up in a slick short film about creative content, which also included a whole host of stars such as Jennifer Aniston, J.J. Abrams, Ron Howard, Octavia Spencer and Reese Witherspoon.

He took to the stage to announce Amazing Stories, teasing one tale from the show about an early 20th century war pilot arriving in the present day.

Earlier this month, the 72-year-old signalled that he would be pushing for new rules that would exclude streaming movies from being nominated for Oscars at the Academy Board of Governors meeting in April.

It came after the success of Netflix film Roma at this year’s Oscars.

Abrams later took to the stage with the singer Sara Bareilles to talk about their series, Little Voice, about a singer living in an artist community in New York.

Bareilles described it as ‘a funny, romantic show’ with the protagonist ‘learning to find herself, and her own true voice.’

Oprah was another high profile speaker as she unveiled her Apple TV+ plus projects which will include documentary Toxic Labour, about workplace harassment, and a series about mental health.

She is also creating what she described as ‘the biggest, most vibrant, most stimulating book club on the planet’.

‘I want to literally convene a meeting of the minds connecting us through books,’ she said.

The club is set to include live streams with the authors through Apple’s platform.

Speaking at the Apple Event on Monday, the TV icon added: ‘There has never been a moment quite like this one.

‘We have this unique opportunity to rise to our best selves in how we use and choose to use both our technology and our humanity.’

Apple TV+ is set to launch later this year.
