Steven Gerrard reacts to Luis Suarez's omission from Jamie Carragher's Premier League XI

Steven Gerrard has delivered a straightforward response to Luis Suarez’s omission from Jamie Carragher’s Premier League XI of the last decade .

All three were teammates at Liverpool following Suarez’s arrival in 2011, until Carragher’s retirement in 2013.

Suarez spearheaded Liverpool’s charge for the Premier League title the season after Carragher had hung up his boots, scoring 31 goals as the Reds were narrowly pipped by Man City.

But despite his huge contribution to Liverpool during his time at the club – which saw him score 69 times and provide 23 assists in 110 appearances – Suarez still didn’t make the cut for Carragher.

The ex-Liverpool defender turned Sky Sports pundit instead opted to choose City’s Sergio Aguero in attack, flanked by Real Madrid pair Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard, formerly of Tottenham and Chelsea respectively.

When told of Suarez’s omission, Gerrard said: “Interesting – he’d have been in mine.”

Surprisingly enough, Carragher’s Sky Sports colleague and ex-Man Utd defender Gary Neville had included Suarez in his team.

He selected the Uruguayan alongside Aguero and Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

Neville said: “I love Aguero to bits and that’s why I put him in. But ultimately if you were telling me to pick a front two, I would want Kane and Suarez.

“Suarez is a phenomenon as a player, he’s absolutely unbelievable.”

Carragher defended his choice, stating: “The reason I went for Bale is because he wasn’t in the league for a long time across the full decade, but he won PFA Player of the Year twice and Young Player of the Year.

“It’s a big thing to win PFA Player of the Year. To do it twice in three years is unbelievable, and it then got him the move [to Real Madrid] for the world record fee.

“I think what he did in those three or four years, being the best player in the league for two out of three years, is something special.”
