Steps’ Claire Richards baffled by Wagamama Veganuary menu that makes ‘tuna’ out of watermelon

Steps’ Claire Richards has taken aim at Wagamama for putting vegan ‘tuna’ made out of watermelon on their menu.

One of many brands to launch new plant-based options to tie in with Veganuary as people across the country attempt to go meat and dairy free for a month, Wagamama has launched a vegan tuna dish made of watermelon which is said to have a sashimi-like texture.

But while we’re intrigued (if a little sceptical) about the no-tuna, it seems Steps singer Claire was far less impressed as she took to Twitter to declare the dish a total Tragedy. (geddit?)

‘This is the silliest thing I’ve ever heard,’ she wrote. ‘Wagamama are advertising Vegan tuna! Contradiction in itself I’m sure but then you find out, it’s seared watermelon!!’

Looking for backup, Claire turned to the nation’s vegan-hater-in-chief Piers Morgan in search of support on the topic.

‘@piersmorgan is this on the same level as the vegan sausage roll or worse?! Watermelon ffs,’ she added.

The tweet split opinion, with one follower writing: ‘I don’t understand why a vegan wouldn’t want to eat something that taste of meat! It makes no sense.

‘I agree there is no need for seared watermelon posing as tuna. Give me a [steak emoji] anyday.’

However, many argued that not cruelty-free alternatives to animal products can serve to help new vegans (or those doing Veganuary) adapt to a plant-based lifestyle.

‘It’s really quite simple – many vegans aren’t vegan because we dislike the taste of meat/dairy etc, but because we don’t want to eat dead flesh and be complicit in animal abuse. That’s it,’ one follower replied.

‘Omg babe that’s awful; you should protest by not ordering it,’ another sarcastically wrote back to Claire.

The star later wrote: ‘Well that was an unexpected response! At no point did I say I was angered by it or was I attacking vegans or their choices. Amazing how so many people that ask me “why I’m bothered” are bothered because they don’t even follow me!

‘Oh and I’m an uneducated, one hit wonder, has been, can’t sing, snowflake that quite rightly doesn’t have to and will not be purchasing a slice of seared watermelon for £12.95!’

Touché.
