Spring 2019: When is the start of Spring? First day of Spring 2019 REVEALED

The Spring Equinox marks the moment when day and night are almost of equal length. Once the Equinox is crossed, Northern Hemisphere inhabitants can expect more hours of daylight than night time. This sunnier situation will continue until the only other equinox of the year takes place in October, when the situation reverses.

The Spring Equinox will occur this Wednesday, March 20, at 9.58pm GMT (2.58pm PT).

The astronomical event marks an important moment in the Sun’s passage across our skies.

Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere – north of the Earth’s Equator – are steadily experiencing earlier sunrises and later sunsets.

These warmer conditions are key for life to enter a stage of regrowth.

Meanwhile, those living south of the Equator will encounter the opposite seasons, meaning a reduction in daylight.

The Spring Equinox will coincidently occur when the Moon reaches full illumination.

This takes place approximately four hours later at 1.43am GMT on March 21 (6.43pm PT on March 20).

The Moon will be an extremely rare Supermoon, a phenomenon occurring when a Full Moon takes place close to the Moon’s perigee – our celestial satellite’s closest approach to our planet.

In the morning of Thursday, March 21, the Full Moon will be a mere 224,173 miles (360,772 km) distant.

This is approximately 12,427 miles (20,000 km) closer than usual.

This change to the moon’s proximity appearance will be unnoticeable to amateur astronomers.

However the Supermoon will significantly impact Earth, raising tides by several inches higher than normal.

The March Full Moon marks the mid-point of the lunar cycle.

Earth is now between the Moon and the Sun, meaning the visible surface of the Moon is fully illuminated.

In addition to better weather, the Spring Equinox is believed by some to be imbued with spiritual meanings.

The season of Spring is traditionally believed to relate to new beginnings and joy.

The Seasonal Soul site writes: “The Spring Equinox is a joyful holiday centred around rebirth and growth.

“The Spring Equinox delivers on nature’s promise: life will return.”
