While the Russo brothers are now in the thick of promoting their new war movie, Mosul, they’re still fielding questions about their last project – two enormous blockbusters that the directors filmed back-to-back for Marvel Studios, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the latter of which has gone on to become the highest-grossing film of all time.
Inevitably, the pair were also recently asked how they felt about Sony’s decision to remove Spider-Man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom Holland’s Peter Parker appeared in both Avengers movies and the Russos’ Captain America threequel, Civil War – thanks to a surprising deal between Sony and Marvel Studios – but the companies recently nixed the idea of Spider-Man in more MCU movies, leaving fans uncertain of whether any future Spidey projects will be much cop.
“I will say, stepping back and trying to be objective as possible, that I think it’s a tragic mistake on Sony’s part to think that they can replicate Kevin’s penchant for telling incredible stories and the amazing success he has had over the years,” said Joe Russo about the split. “I think it’s a big mistake.”
“It was so difficult to get him into Civil War,” Anthony added. “It was an extremely long and hard process. But we were driven to help make it happen. But Kevin Feige pulled it off, somehow. Disney and all the good people at Sony found a way to make it work and it lasted a few films. We had a wonderful experience with that and I think audiences really appreciated that marriage. But we know how hard that marriage was to make in the first place, so the fact that the marriage fell apart isn’t really that surprising to me and Joe.”
Tom Holland will reprise the role of Spider-Man for Sony in future movies, which will potentially see him in a crossover situation with Tom Hardy’s Venom and Jared Leto’s Morbius.
“Basically, we’ve made five great movies,” Holland told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s been five amazing years. I’ve had the time of my life. Who knows what the future holds? But all I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life. It’s going to be so fun, however we choose to do it. The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler.”
