Spawn finally revealed for Mortal Kombat 11 with first gameplay trailer

Spawn, the edgy anti-hero of the 90s, will soon be joining Mortal Kombat 11’s roster towards the end of March.

We
already had an idea of what Spawn would look like in Mortal
Kombat 11
thanks to a
recent action figure
, but what fans really wanted to see was actual
gameplay. And now, we’ve got it.

Spawn, a comic book anti-hero who first debuted in the 90s, was confirmed to be a DLC character for the gore-tastic fighting game last year, but developer NetherRealm kept relatively quiet about him until yesterday.

In
a new gameplay trailer, it’s clear that NetherRealm love the character as much
as his fans do, with a moveset that utilises his powers and weapons from the
comics, including his guns, chains, and even his cape.

The last time Spawn guest-starred in a fighting game, it was 2002’s Soulcalibur 2, but technical limitations meant he appeared without his trademark cape, so seeing it fully realised here is practically a marvel.

Keith David, who voiced the character in his animated series, has also returned to reprise his role, with cinematic director Dominic Cianciolo writing on the PlayStation Blog about how excited the developers were to have him.

‘Our excitement only grew when we learned that actor Keith David, the original voice of Spawn, would be reprising his role in Mortal Kombat 11. Keith voiced the character in “Todd McFarlane’s Spawn”, the Emmy award-winning HBO animated series, so it was a dream come true – not only for us, but for Keith himself. He came to the voiceover sessions positively thrilled to be back in the role, and his enthusiasm shines through in every aspect of his performance.’

Spawn
will be made available as part of the early access period for players who
purchased the Kombat Pack on 17 March, and then on 24 March for everyone else.

A
new costume pack called the Matinee Skin Pack will also release, featuring three
new costumes for Kotal Khan, Erron Black, and Jacqui Briggs.

In
fact, Jacqui will get two outfits, with one making her take on Spawn’s
appearance.

With
Spawn’s release, Mortal Kombat 11’s DLC will be over, at least for now. Nothing
has been officially confirmed, but it wouldn’t be surprising if NetherRealm
already had a second wave of characters planned for release.

In fact, the initial DLC leak that accurately predicted the entire line-up also mentioned several other characters that have yet to be included, such as Evil Dead’s Ash Williams – who seemed to be hinted at officially in one of the trailers but has never come up again.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Wonder if more people will play as Jacqui just because of this outfit (Pic: NetherRealm/PlayStation)
