David de Gea received treatment for a muscular problem during Spain’s 1-1 draw with Sweden and demanded to continue playing before he was eventually forced off in the second half.

Sweden striker Marcus Berg broke the deadlock with a 50th-minute header past De Gea and the goalkeeper’s misery was compounded as he went down injured on the hour mark.

The 28-year-old shot-stopper appeared to tweak a muscle while taking a goal kick and looked in some discomfort as he hobbled his way off the pitch alongside two members of Spain’s medical staff.

Chelsea star Kepa Arrizabalaga came on in De Gea’s place for the remainder of the Euro 2020 qualifier.

Sweden looked to be heading for victory as the clock wound down at Stockholm’s Friends Arena before Rodrigo scored a dramatic injury-time equaliser to book Spain’s place at next summer’s tournament.

The sight of De Gea hobbling off the pitch on Tuesday night will undoubtedly be a concern for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ahead of Manchester United’s clash with Premier League leaders Liverpool this weekend.

Speaking after the game, Spain manager Robert Moreno revealed that De Gea was treated for the muscle problem at half-time and asked to play on regardless.

‘He had pain in the abductor muscle but he received treatment at half-time and wanted to keep playing,’ Moreno said.

‘He gave us his word, but in the end he couldn’t continue.’

Liverpool have had injury concerns of their own ahead of Sunday’s trip to United, but two of Jurgen Klopp’s key stars are in line to make their returns.

Alisson, who has been out with a calf problem since Liverpool’s opening match of the season, is expected to start at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian joined Joel Matip in full training on Tuesday and Klopp has reportedly decided to start them both this weekend.

Matip picked up a knock before the international break and and missed the Reds’ wins over RB Salzburg and Leicester.
