Earlier this month, Paramount Pictures confirmed Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is in the works, and now new photos from the set reveal a major character from the video games will be part of the cast.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will include six new cast members from the beloved video game. Sonic 3 already confirmed that Jim Carrey will reprise his role as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, and among the newcomers were Alyla Browne (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), James Wolk (Harley Quinn), Sofia Pernas (Jane the Virgin), Cristo Fernández (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts), and Jorma Taccone (WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story). Actress Alyla Browne has shared several pictures from the set on Instagram and confirmed she is playing a major character from the video games.

Sonic the Hedgehog movie actor Tika Sumpter shares an exciting update on the third film along with the Knuckles spinoff series.
The set of pictures shows Browne on her chair on set, and the name on it reveals she is playing Maria Robotnik. However, the actress was careful not to give away her appearance. The actress wore a long winter coat backward and didn’t reveal anything else from the set.
Her character, Maria, is Professor Gerald Robotnik’s granddaughter and the cousin of Dr. Eggman. She is suffering from a terminal illness, which pushed Robotnik to create Project Shadow to save her. Maria later became close friends with Shadow the Hedgehog, Gerald’s creation.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ended with Dr. Robotnik falling off a giant robot. However, a post-credits scene hinted that the character was not dead as his body was never found. The official X account for Sonic the Hedgehog also released a teaser with Dr. Robotnik’s signature laugh, with the caption: “You all thought I was gone, but I’ve just been underground. What you’ve seen from me is only a #shadow of things to come…”
Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are also a trio at the end of the film, which hints that the upcoming threequel will follow the three characters together. Shadow the Hedgehog will also be a part of the film and is expected to be the main antagonist. So far, other details about the plot are kept under wraps.
Ben Schwartz will also return as the voice of the iconic humanoid hedgehog. Colleen O’Shaughnessey will reprise her role as Tails, as well as Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna, as well as James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, and Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski. Shadow the Hedgehog will also be a part of the film, but Paramount Pictures hasn’t announced who will play him.
Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy Group’s first two films in the franchise were very successful. 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog made $302.5 million at the worldwide box office from a budget of $90 million. The sequel followed two years later, grossing $405.1 million on a similar budget as the first film (via The Numbers). As for its reception, the first one has a rating of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes and 69% for Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be released in movie theaters on Dec. 20, 2024.
