Solskjaer must be Man Utd manager… if Mourinho was in charge they would be out of the Champions League by now

LET’S get something straight, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still the man for the Old Trafford hot seat.

As ever with Manchester United, knee-jerk reactions come after every game.

If Ole wins, he’s the Messiah and, if he loses, we start hearing reasons why he shouldn’t get the job.

For me we should look at his body of work so far and it’s magnificent.

He’s been in charge for 19 games, winning 14, drawing two and losing three.

One of those defeats against Paris Saint Germain was over-turned in the second leg anyway with a sensational performance in the French capital.

Had Jose Mourinho still been in charge I’m pretty sure United would have been out of the Champions League by now and wouldn’t be challenging for the top four.

Yes, United were very poor against Wolves in the FA Cup on Saturday and deserved to go out.

Solskjaer though was honest enough to admit that, recognises that setbacks were always going to happen at some point, and is already looking forward to the games ahead without spending too much time worrying about the past.

I’m not saying United have to announce now that he’s officially got the job because I don’t think there’s any need to do it.

The end of the season will be fine but he is absolutely the perfect fit for the role and nothing which has happened recently has dissuaded me from that view.

The fact they have lost two in a row makes things look worse than they are.

But United were desperately unlucky to lose to Arsenal last weekend with the keepers playing a major part.

David De Gea made a bad mistake and Bernd Leno made some cracking saves.

The wheels haven’t come off, this is just a little puncture and the international break might have come at a good time for United.

They can re-group on their return. All that said, let us also salute the brilliance of Wolves.

They’ve shown great respect for the FA Cup and put out strong teams to try and win it when the likes of Newcastle, Leicester and Bournemouth did not.

Why sides which are unlikely to get relegated do that I will never know.

It sends out a bad message to the fans who want to experience the joy of winning silverware.

Of course they want to stay in the Premier League but there is no substitute for a triumphant day out at Wembley, that is what makes for the best memories.

You only have to see how Molineux was rocking on Saturday night to see the benefits a good cup run can have on a club.

What a season their centre-forward Raul Jimenez is having.

He has formed an impressive partnership with Diogo Jota.

He is so good at holding the ball up and Jota’s pace complements him really well.

At the back Conor Coady has been a consistent thorn in the side of opposition strikers and cannot be far away from an England call-up.

Wolves have a lot to shout about right now.
