Forecasters expect the light show could even be seen from Chicago, Des Moines, Seattle, Cleveland and Halifax.
In Canada, the spectacle will be stronger and will appear over Yellowknife, Rankin, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Inuvik.
According to the SWPC at 10.40am GMT (5.40am EDT), solar winds are streaming from the Sun at speeds of 466km per second or 1,042,000mph.
The University of Alaska, Fairbanks, expects the solar winds to trigger “high auroral activity”.
The university said in its auroral forecast: “Weather permitting, highly active auroral displays will be visible overhead from Barrow to Bethel, Dillingham and Ketchikan, and visible low on the horizon from King Salmon.”
