Sister Sledge icon Kathy Sledge, 62, to become TV star as lockdown plan takes to screens

Singer Kathy Sledge, famed for hit songs such as We Are Family and He’s The Greatest Dancer, is no stranger to being watched by thousands. Now, the hitmaker is set to be watched by millions as her latest project takes off with a TV show.

The former lead singer of Sister Sledge departed the group in 1989 after achieving two US number one hits with We Are Family and He’s The Greatest Dancer.

Since leaving the world-famous group, Kathy has gone on to release 12 singles as a solo artist, with one taking number one spot.

Now, Kathy, 62, is gearing up to perform to a huge crowd at Henley Festival in the UK with Disco Classical.

However, before jetting across the Atlantic Ocean, the mum-of-two has teamed up with her daughter, Kristen Lightfoot, for an exciting television show project.

Speaking to Express.co.uk about her latest television project, Kathy said: “My daughter and I were actually shopping a talk show, because We Are Family is such a household name.

“Every Saturday at 1.30pm on the East Coast [of America], we will have this virtual family room where people would show up. My daughter would always have a glass of wine in her hand for the folks in New York.

“I would have a cup of coffee in my hand for all the folks in Los Angeles because it’s 10.30am here.”

Speaking of her online meeting room, Kathy explained: “We started seeing these cocktail emojis pop up, and wine glasses from over there in Europe, because it’s happy hour, it’s like 5.30pm.”

Explaining the online meeting room, Kathy added: “We would meet and we still do, we read up in this virtual family room and we do everything. Sometimes surprise guests come in, like [American percussionist] Sheila E or different artists come in the room and surprise everyone and we found this community really built on We Are Family, and it has so much more meaning now.”

While Virtual Family Room may have started online, Kathy went on to say: “I want to make sure that we have a network that’s global, because, it’s the music that I have there.

“It’s been very good vibes, you know, we’re with a strong booking agency, they’re helping us shop it.”

The singer continued: “We’re meeting with production companies and that’s one of the stipulations, we want to make sure that it’s where we started.”

While Kathy spent her lockdown in a bubble with her family, the singing legend revealed that she contracted the coronavirus but is thankful her symptoms were not that severe.

“We actually all experienced the virus, I did, and it’s very frightful – it to me, it was like the flu, thank God – we lived it with everyone,” she said.

Addressing the easing of lockdown restrictions across the globe, Kathy said: “Thank goodness, the world is opening up, we had to carry each other through.

“I don’t think we’re going to walk away and say, ‘OK. we’re done with that year’, but we will never look back to 2020.

“We know now that we can just reach out and see someone or maybe you want to see them more now.”

Kathy, who is set to headline Henley Festival with the Disco Classical Orchestra, admits that she is beyond excited to return to the stage.

She exclaimed: “I cannot wait,” before adding: “Honestly, it’s much different from seeing handclaps on the screen, or roses and flowers and hearts. I can’t wait to just hear someone sing along.”

She went on to add: “I’m very interactive with the crowd and so it’s reciprocated, you feel it.

“I’m so excited about getting back on stage.”

Disco Classical ft Kathy Sledge will be headlining alongside Madness, James Blunt and Sophie Ellis-Bextor at Henley Festival 2021 from September 15-19, with Henley’s Summer Fling taking place from July 9-11 www.henley-festival.co.uk.
