In February, TV network NBC decided to shake up their judging panel by removing Mel, 43, and model Heidi Klum, 45.

It is likely Mel could return to the X Factor later this year, the Champions show of Britain’s Got Talent or even on Australia’s X Factor.

Cowell, speaking at the US launch of AGT, said: “Well you know I think she is going to do another one of our shows in another country.

“I have worked with Mel on so many shows and that will continue. When it works you actually do become closer than you think.

“Then you find out you have fortunately a lot of shows where you can end up in another country and you are back with them and its easy.”

Cowell stuck by Mel, who he called her “big brother” after two years of public dramas as she divorced her ex-husband Stephen Belafonte.

The TV exec insisted he did not have any say in Mel departing AGT.

He added: “Everyone thinks that I make those decisions. I don’t. But these things just happen and you pray that it is going to work.”
