Netflix tests Instagram style feed of photos and trailers from upcoming content that you can post on social media

  •  The company have begun trialling a new feed in its mobile app for a test group
  •  Dubbed Extras, the feed compiles trailers, images and alerts for their shows
  •  Videos in the feed play automatically with no sound and scrolled horizontally
  • The images in the feed are not available anywhere else within Netflix’s app

Netflix is testing a new Instagram-style feed in its mobile app featuring trailers, photos and alerts for new movies, TV shows and other content.

The feed, dubbed Extras, is currently rolling out Extras to a selected test audience – although Netflix hasn’t commented on who will be receiving it.

Extras also lets you share your TV and movie recommendations with friends on social media, as well as the ability to add titles directly to your watch list.

The Coming Soon icon has been replaced with a new Extras icon which brings users to the feed, for those who have the feature.

Much like Instagram, videos included in the feed will play automatically but silently and trailers won’t automatically launch into the full movie or show.

Image galleries can be scrolled through horizontally, again like Instagram, and for trailers, you can click through the app to watch.

Variety report notes that the images in Extras aren’t available anywhere else within Netflix’s app.

‘We are testing a feed of video extras in our mobile app to help fans connect more deeply with the titles they love and discover new ones to watch,’ a Netflix spokesman said.

‘These tests typically vary in length of time and by region, and may not become permanent.’

This isn’t the first time Netflix has taken some inspirations from apps like Instagram and Snapchat.

Last year the video service began to integrate vertical video previews, which mirror the look of Instagram stories, into its app.

This new test is running on both Android and iOS devices, but it’s not clear whether it will roll out to everyone or when that might happen.

Netflix faces a growing collection of companies it will have to compete against when companies like Disney and Apple launch their streaming services.

The firm wrote in its last quarterly letter: ‘Our focus is not on Disney+, Amazon or others, but on how we can improve our experience for our members.’
