Serena Williams debuted her latest Nike outfit at the French Open this weekend – and it proved even more of a talking point than the controversial catsuit she wore the previous year.
In 2018, the Grand Slam champion was banned from wearing a black catsuit on court during her first match since giving birth in 2017. At the time, Williams said the ensemble made her feel like a “warrior” and “superhero”, also explaining that the suit had been designed to help with circulation and prevent blood clots, which she suffered from after pregnancy.
Not one to be deterred by a strict dress code, Serena was back with fighting sartorial spirit at the Roland Garros on Monday, where she won her first round ladies singles against Vitalia Diatchenko.
The 37-year-old walked onto the court wearing a custom monochrome cape with matching shorts and crop top, designed by Off-White creator Virgil Abloh in collaboration with Nike. The avant-garde outfit was not only a style statement, but it also held a hidden message, with the French words for ‘Mother,’ ‘Champion’, ‘Queen’ and ‘Goddess’ subtly intertwined in the pattern.
“Those are things that mean a lot to me and reminders for me and for everyone that wants to wear it,” Williams said about the outfit after the match. “Just remind everyone that they can be champions and are queens. So I love that about it.”
It’s not the first time Off-White and Nike have designed an eye-catching ensemble for Serena.
In August 2018, the two brands joined forces to create the ‘Queen Collection’ for the 23-time Grand Slam champion at the US open, which saw Serena play in everything from ballerina-inspired tutus to glittery trainers.
With Wimbledon a few weeks away, we’re sure they’ll be plenty more empowering looks from Serena still to come this summer.
