Selena The Series: Christian Serratos on if she really sings or not in new Netflix drama

The Walking Dead’s Christian Serratos will take the lead in a new biopic miniseries on Netflix, Selena: The Series. After playing a prominent role in AMC’s zombie staple, the TV star has opened up on how much of her own voice was used in the series based on the life of Mexican-American singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez.

Christian Serratos has landed her first lead role in a new series based on the life and career of Selena Quintanilla-Perez, simply known by her stage name ‘Selena’.

The Texan-born star rose to fame in the 1980s, with Billboard naming her the top-selling Latin artist of the 1990s.

Netflix’s upcoming limited series will explore the Queen of Tejano music’s life on and off stage and reveal the difficult choices along the way.

As with any musical biopic, viewers are keen to know how much Serratos will attempt to emulate Selena’s golden pipes.

Selena’s life was previously detailed in the 1997 biopic, simply titled Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez.

However, the nine-episode series will delve even further into the singer’s complex family life.

The series is created by writer and producer Moisés Zamora, and Serratos will be joined by prominent Latinx stars such as Ricardo Antonio Chavira (Desperate Housewives) and Seidy López (House).

Zamora promised the Netflix series will bring “one of the most important American stories” to life on screen.

No spoilers here, but Selena’s tragic later life could cap off the year with one of Netflix’s biggest tear-jerkers.

Until then, though, the catchy Tejano tracks are bound to get viewers dancing just in time for the holiday season.

The showrunner also assured newcomers to Selena’s musical style will grow to appreciate her difficult story throughout the series.

Zamora added: “Everyone can relate to that. What family does not love each other and work hard enough to make it happen?”

Christian Serratos’ performance could cement her as a household name, and she’s also set to reprise her role as Rosita Espinosa in the extended tenth season of The Walking Dead.

Selena: The Series premieres on Friday, December 4 on Netflix.
