Samsung’s anticipated folding phone will use ‘Ultra Thin’ glass and come with a fingerprint sensor on the side according to new leaks

  • Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip will have an ‘Ultra Thin’ glass display leaks suggest
  • The foldable device may also have a fingerprint sensor mounted on its side
  • A glass display will improve on the Galaxy Fold’s plastic screen
  • The Z Flip will reportedly still have a crease over the hinge

A splashy new folding phone from Samsung that bends vertically like a clam shell will use a new proprietary ‘Ultra Thin’ glass according to new leaks.

XDA Developers, which has leaked several details about a different Samsung flagship, the Galaxy S20, says the upcoming Z Flip, a new addition to Samsung’s line of foldable devices, will use a reported ‘Ultra Thin Glass’ on top of an AMOLED display.

This means the phone will stand apart from other models of foldable phones including the upcoming Motorla razr and Samsung’s original Galaxy Fold, both of which have plastic screens.

While the new hardware sounds intriguing, Max Weinbach of XDA Developers reports that it will not solve one of the biggest drawbacks to foldable display technology – a noticeable crease located above the hinge.

Weinbach also reports that the Z Flip will have several other specs and features including a fingerprint scanner on the side of the phone and dual 12 megapixel cameras – one wide and one ultra wide lens.

Additionally, wireless charging and reverse wireless charging will also be supported.

The leaks come shortly after a flood of information on the Samsung GalaxyS20 and S20 Plus – two upcoming premium phones from Samsung.

According to XDA Developers, the forthcoming Galaxy S20 Plus – the larger version of Samsung’s flagship phones that are slated to be released in February – will definitively have a high-end 120 HZ display which had previously only been rumored.

The 120 HZ display will offer a high refresh rate but will only work with the phone’s standard resolution as opposed to the WQHD – quad high –  setting that clocks in at 1440p as opposed to 1080p.

Additionally, XDA says that the phone will come with a traditional headphone jack and as well as an in-display ‘ultrasonic’ fingerprint scanner.

The latter feature marks a significant confirmation as Samsung has attempted to include in-display fingerprint-reading technology in the past to notably mixed results.

Samsung’s Galaxy S10, which uses similar technology, found itself at the center of controversy when customers pointed out that the technology – meant to enable biometric security – was both slow and easily fooled.

Both the S20 and the Z Flip could be introduced in the next several months.
