Sam Heughan fans have seen a new side to the star this week as he opens up about his love for dance music, letting out a ‘wee fart’ on stage and ‘unpleasant’ sex-scenes with on-screen wife Caitriona Balfe.
Sam, who is best known for his role as Jamie Fraser in Outlander, returned to Glasgow last month after spending much of lockdown in Hawaii and this week spoke with radio presenter Cassi Gilliespie and Roisin Kelly on their brand new BBC podcast.
The girls and Sam began chatting about the ‘taboo’ subject of ‘jobbies’ and farting when the star revealed that he has actually had an embarrassing moment on stage.
He said: “I was doing this crazy play of Batman on stage and I remember being in Brazil and I might have let out a wee fart on stage dressed as Batman!”
Cassi asked him if he had enjoyed being back in Glasgow after spending a few months away.
Sam said: “You know what, I have been enjoying Glasgow, I know what were dealing with at the moment is challenging and hard but Glasgow is brilliant, I just love that people are out.
“I was in the park yesterday, it’s fantastic it’s really nice to be back. Glasgow has always been a very social place and the people are just so welcoming.”
Cassi and Roisin’s podcast the Love/Hate club sees them ask celebrity guests what they are loving and hating at the moment and when the girls asked Sam what he’s currently loving his answer wasn’t very surprising.
He said: “So I love dance music okay? I think I’ve talked about Bowie your good friend and I’ve talked about him on many channels.
[Talking about dance tunes] He added: “It’s the really bad ones I’m loving at the moment. Is it? ‘I am a Raver?’ I used to think it was ‘I am a Rager’ and I always thought that was really Scottish!”
Sam, who is originally from Balmaclellan in Dumfries, previously said he would love George Bowie to play at his 40th birthday party and admits that he used to rave at Glasgow club The Arches when he was a student.
Sam revealed that one of his pet peeves at the minute is using video chatting sites to communicate with others as he is usually ‘lying around in his boxer shorts’ and hates that he needs to get dressed up for the occasion.
Sam also said that he keeps in touch with his on-screen wife Caitronia Balfe even when they aren’t filming Outlander and their relationship off-screen is more like brother and sister.
He said: “We keep in contact a lot! We met up last week in the park, two metres apart of course but it was nice to see her, we’re like brother and sister now! We know each other really well as we’ve been working together for six years which is just crazy.
“She’s like my sister and tells me exactly what I’m doing wrong and I need to know these things!”
Roisin went on to ask Sam if it was awkward having to film intimate scenes with someone he sees as a sister.
He said: “To be honest we’re so close now, we know each other well…those intimate scenes where we bash our bodies together they are never that pleasant and they are really important part of the show and characters and their relationship, but we’ve done all kinds of things together to get into those scenes and sometimes it’s a wee bit of Dutch courage!”
Speaking of sex-scenes, Cassi wanted to know the on-set secrets and to how the characters actually look sweaty and Sam revealed that it was all down to Vaseline.
He said: “It is Vaseline, it is exactly that. You get all Vaselined up, and water spray to create little droplets.”
The 40-year-old fitness fanatic also discussed launching his fitness campaign My Peak Challenge in 2015.
He admitted that he has been running a lot since returning to Glasgow especially along the River Clyde and also in Kelvingrove Park.
Cassi went on to ask the star about his time on Outlander and if sometimes on set he doesn’t feel as physically fit as he has in previous series of Outlander.
He said: “Absolutely, in series one I went hell for leather and working hard and you know you have a wee bit of a fall off don’t you? And they are like you know you don’t have to take your clothes off for a few episodes so you’re kind of like get a bit laxed.
“And you know catering on set can be dangerous, there’s always cake around and that sort of stuff! So yeah there’s been many of times where I’ve been like oh God I’ve got to take my top off tomorrow!
“The best way to do it is to get dehydrated on a couple of glasses of wine and you don’t really care!”
