Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Lidl and Asda recall EIGHTY types of houmous over Salmonella fears


MORE than 80 types of houmous from major supermarket stores have been urgently recalled over fears they could be contaminated with salmonella.

It was originally feared 22 products could contain the dangerous bug but now an earlier recall has been widened to 83.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has urged customers to throw away or return the items – made by supplier Zorba Delicacies.

If you return the items to the store where you bought them you’ll get a full refund.

The government department said: “The products listed above might be contaminated with salmonella.

“If you have bought any of the above products do not eat them. Instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.”

Among the products is the highly popular Nando’s-branded Houmous + PERi-PERi Drizzle, which is sold at Asda, Ocado, and Sainsbury’s.

Food poisoning: What are the symptoms of salmonella infection?

SYMPTOMS of food poisoning include:

  • feeling sick (nausea)
  • diarrhoea
  • being sick (vomiting)
  • stomach cramps
  • a high temperature of 38C or above
  • feeling generally unwell – such as feeling tired or having aches and chills

The symptoms usually start within a few days of eating the food that caused the infection.

Sometimes they start after a few hours or not for a few weeks.

Salmonella infection is among the most common causes of food poisoning.

It can prove particularly dangerous to the elderly and young children.

Among the crippling symptoms of salmonella infection are diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever.

It can take up to 72 hours on average for symptoms to develop after ingesting contaminated food.

Once contracted, debilitating symptoms can last for as long as a week.

Most sufferers recover without medical help, but some serious cases require hospital treatment for dehydration.

In rare cases in vulnerable patients, salmonella poisoning can be fatal.

Salmonella is most commonly spread from raw meat touching cooked food through poor storage.
