Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has sent packages of gin to businesses around the Welsh town of Wrexham as he tries to take over the local non-league football team.

Reynolds, one of the most famous actors in the world, is currently in the unlikely pursuit of trying to take over Welsh football team Wrexham AFC. The attempt is being made alongside It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney.

The pair have confirmed that they are making a documentary about the process of becoming football club owners.

Some have questioned the intentions of the two actors, known best for their comedic roles. They’ve both, however, maintained that they are very serious about the takeover and want to make Wrexham AFC into a ‘global force’.

To reinforce that, Reynolds has taken to trying to ingratiate himself with local businesses tied to the club. The Fat Boar, a local pub, received a surprise gift from the actor, who sent a crate or of Aviation Gin.

Reynolds became a part-owner of Aviation Gin in 2018 but recently sold the brand to Diageo for $610million (£466m).

In a tweet, The Fat Boar showed off the gift, as well as a note from the actor. It read: ‘To The Fat Boar: here’s a bouquet of rose coloured glasses. See ya soon – Ryan Reynolds.’

The Turf Hotel also received a care package of 18 bottles of the gin.

Both businesses have said that they will donate the money raised from the sale of the gin to local charities.

Reynolds and McElhenney will currently have to wait to see if their attempted takeover is approved. To do so, the pair will have to achieve 75% approval from the 2,108 supporters eligible to vote on takeovers.

In a recent Q +A with the club’s supporters, Reynolds said: ‘We believe your club is a sleeping giant, incredible story, stadium and fans. The sky is the limit. We want Wrexham to be a global force.

‘We want to build this club out, thoughtfully and carefully. We don’t pretend to know better than the supporters. It’s a learning process for us, we are here to bolster the club with financial support and grow.’

The pair will find out if they were successful in their takeover bid on November 16.
