Aston Merrygold has dropped his new single, amid rumours he may be unmasked as Robin on The Masked Singer finale.

The JLS star has shared the lyric video to his new song Overboard, his first solo effort in two years.

A different flavour to Aston’s signature solo track Get Stupid, Overboard is a mix of old school R&B and pop.

The 33-year-old said: ‘I’m very excited to be releasing Overboard. It’s great to have been back in the studio working on new music, and there’s more to come as well!

‘I can’t wait to see you all soon, when it’s safe to do so.’

Fans and friends including Alexandra Burke shared their excitement at the track release, with his X Factor pal leaving fire emojis under the Instagram announcement.

However, the timing may seem a bit suspicious for The Masked Singer sleuths, who reckon the popstar is in Robin’s costume.

On tonight’s grand finale, we will finally find out the identities of Robin, Badger and Sausage, with one of the mystery celebs being crowned the winner.

Since week one, viewers have guessed that Robin is Aston, with the singer the bookies’ favourite to be behind the mask.

Clues pointing towards Aston include an Irish connection (the singer’s mum is Irish) and references to football – with Aston playing on behalf of England in the European Youth Games as a teen.

His costume and performance of Rockin Robin’ in week five also have fans pointing the finger at Aston, as he sang the song while impersonating Michael Jackson on Stars In Your Eyes.

However, there are plenty of other celebs that have been guessed, including Olly Murs, Nicky Byrne and Perry Kiely of Diversity fame.

It could just be that Aston is releasing new music because… well, he’s a popstar, and to drum up anticipation for JLS’s big comeback tour.

The Beat Again singers – Aston, Marvin Humes, Oritse Williams and JB Gill, had initially planned to go on tour in November, but their concert dates were pushed back until June due to the pandemic.

It will be the band’s first tour since their Greatest Hits Tour in December 2013, which came after they announced a hiatus after five years on the scene.

JLS shot to fame when they came second on The X Factor in 2008, and achieved five UK number ones.

But will Aston have singing in a bird costume to add to his 2021 checklist? Only time will tell.

The Masked Singer is on tonight at 7pm on ITV.

Overboard is out now.

The Masked Singer series 2: Who is behind each mask?

With the nation more or less confined to their living rooms every Saturday night, The Masked Singer has proven to be something of a lockdown 3.0 saviour.

While the performances are of course a draw, most of the fun lies in guessing just who is behind each mask.
