Robert Pattinson was 'absolutely relieved' to get the call to play Batman

Ever been really nervous about getting a huge job offer? That’s what Robert Pattinson was feeling while waiting for the Bat-signal to shine his way.

The “Twilight” actor will star in director Matt Reeves’ upcoming “The Batman” movie, and in a new Variety interview, Pattinson talks for the first time about getting the role and admits to feeling “absolutely relieved” when Reeves called him.

Rather ironically, Pattinson received the good news on the set of “Tenet,” directed by Christopher Nolan – the last guy to direct a solo Bat-film. “I was like, ‘What a coincidence this is happening. It’s absolutely crazy,’ ” says Pattinson, who sought hints from the “Dark Knight” trilogy filmmaker about how to move around in the Batsuit.

For the record, Pattinson has tried on his new superhero costume and it is equal parts transformative and “pretty humiliating,” he tells Variety. “You’ve got five people trying to shove you into something. Once you’ve got it on, it’s like, ‘Yeah, I feel strong, I feel tough, even though I had to have someone squeezing my butt cheeks into the legs.’”

Pattinson revealed in the interview that he had been pursuing the Batman role since he heard that Reeves wanted to chronicle the younger years of Bruce Wayne and his cape-and-cowled alter ego. “The Batman” is scheduled to start filming this winter for a June 2021 release, and Pattinson will be the latest to play Gotham City’s resident protector, following the likes of Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck.

Pattinson’s casting drew ire on the Internet, though the 33-year-old actor’s taking it in stride.

“To be honest, it was less vitriolic than I was expecting,” he says, adding “it’s much more fun when you’re an underdog.”

He’s also ready for the paparazzi to return, though Instagram makes it easier for celebrity than in his “Twilight” days: “There are just so many photos of me you can get in a black baseball cap getting a diet peach Snapple. Or on Friday night, getting a Kit Kat.”
