Residents have been left scratching their heads after this river in Dongguan, China turned a bright blue colour.

Footage of the phenomenon shows the vibrant water, that looks like it has been dyed.

In some areas where the current is stronger, the water appears to be lighter.

Some locals have expressed their concerns, with a number believing that the strange occurrence may be due to a nearby petrol station dumping out chemical waste.

The person who shared the footage on social media insists the video is real and not ‘special effects’.

‘It’s not special effects; I’ve never seen anything like it,’ he told Asia Wire.

When he returned to the scene later to check, the water had returned to its normal colour.

Later reports claimed that the colour change was the work of an employee from a nearby express delivery point, who had poured paint from plastic drums into the water, but it has been not been confirmed.

The Dongguan Ecological Environment Bureau is currently on site conducting tests, reports local media.
