SPOTTING birds is a fun way to get kids interested in garden wildlife – and you can attract them with a simple feeder made from recycled boxes.
It is one of many crafty creations that are easy to conjure up from rubbish destined for the bin. So, have a dig around and take a look at these savvy switch-ups.
Pecks appeal: You can use old egg boxes to make a bird feeder. You don’t need the lid, so cut that off and put it in the recycling. Pierce a hole in each corner of the box, then take two pieces of string, about 12 inches long, and use them to make handles by threading through the holes and securing in a knot. Add your bird food and hang in the garden from a branch or on a hook on the fence.
B-rush to it: You might be thinking about buying an organiser for your make-up brushes. I like the look of the gold Oliver Bonas brush holder from oliver bonas.com for £28. But to save cash, collect old toilet roll tubes and decorate them as you wish. I wanted a silver metallic theme so I wrapped a piece of tin foil around mine and secured it with tape. Then glue the bottoms of each tube to a piece of cardboard in an organised pattern. For taller holders, tape two tubes together.
Pizza cake: One savvy mum, who posted her crafts on Facebook, made beautiful rustic initials for her kids’ bedroom doors with a pizza box and twigs from her daily walks. To make your own, draw your kid’s initial on a piece of cardboard, such as a pizza or cereal box, then cut it out. Glue twigs on to your card letter with any strong adhesive. Once you have covered the card in twigs, decorate it as desired. You could use paint, glitter, ribbon — anything you can find.
Bank it: Make your own piggy bank with an empty two-litre soft drink bottle, scissors and tape. Cut out the middle section of the bottle so you have three parts. Put the top of the bottle inside the bottom of the bottle, then tape together. Paint the bottle your chosen colour (spray paint works well if you have that), then cut a hole, big enough for your change, on the side. Draw on eyes, and make some ears to stick on with the leftover piece of bottle. You could also use four bottle tops to make feet.
