Real Madrid player ratings vs Ajax: Asensio a bright spark but which pair only scored 3s?

Real Madrid suffered a humiliating 4-1 loss to Ajax as the Champions League holders were dumped out of the competition 5-3 on aggregate.

Santiago Solari’s side headed into the second leg of the tie with a 2-1 advantage but fell behind early to strikes from Hakim Ziyech and David Neres.

Injuries to Lucas Vazquez and Vinicius Junior did not help matters and things got worse when .

Substitute Marco Asensio pulled a goal back for the hosts but a fourth goal from Lasse Schone and a red card for Nacho rounded off a dismal night for Los Blancos.

Express Sport has rated how the Real Madrid players performed against Ajax, but do you agree?

Real Madrid player ratings vs Ajax – Champions League

GK: Thibaut Courtois – 4

Not much of a chance with Ajax’s opening strikes but will be disappointed to get lobbed by Schone’s free-kick.

Made some decent stops but seemed short of his best.

RB: Dani Carvajal – 5

Kept plugging away manfully despite being overrun for much of the night.

CB: Raphael Varane – 4

Looked lost without Sergio Ramos alongside him in central defence.

Hit the Ajax bar with a header but defensive solidity would have been more welcome.

CB: Nacho – 3

Couldn’t keep a handle on the free-flowing Ajax attack and was eventually put out of his misery when he received his marching orders late on.

LB: Sergio Reguilon – 5

Played well despite the humiliating scoreline, with the youngster looking like a long-term successor to Marcelo.

CM: Casemiro – 3

Will never be able to live down, with it sure to appear on highlights reels from now until the end of days.

Was pulled all over the shop by the visitors and might as well have not been on the pitch.

CM: Toni Kroos – 4

Not the performance he needed to defy his critics, with the German caught out by younger, hungrier opponents.

CM: Luka Modric – 5

Found the going tough up against Frenkie de Jong, although he can’t be accused of a lack of effort.

Tried his best to get Madrid moving with his passing, but received very little help from those around him.

RAM: Lucas Vazquez – 4

An early threat with his delivery from wide but injury saw him subbed before he really got going.

LAM: Vinicius Junior – 5

Another untimely blow for Real as the Brazilian was forced off, having looked most likely to get them back in the match.

ST: Karim Benzema – 4

The match passed him by for long periods and the Frenchman just wasn’t sharp enough when given a sniff of an opportunity.

SUB: Gareth Bale (on for Vazquez, 29 mins) – 5

Another with something to prove, and the Welshman set about dragging his side bar into the match with plenty of gusto.

Hit the post and added extra pace to the foundering Madrid attack, but nothing quite came off.

SUB: Marco Asensio (on for Vinicius, 35 mins) – 7

Easily Real’s best performer, with the Spaniard looking sharp and threatening after coming on.

Bagged himself a consolation goal, and was one of the few to emerge from this mauling with any credit.

SUB: Federico Valverde (on for Casemiro, 87 mins) – N/A

Too little time to make an impact.
