Razer Uses April Fool’s Day Joke to Test Demand for Toaster, Now In Development

  • Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan announced that the Razer toaster, a fake item presented on April Fool’s Day, is now real, and in development.
  • Positive feedback prompted Razer to test consumer demand by way of likes on a Facebook page.
  • Tan said he is putting together a team of designers and engineers to make the toaster— which prints the Razer logo into bread—but it will take a “few years.”

Razer’s Database-Link-e1521645463907 April Fool’s Day logo-printing toaster is reportedly in development thanks to positive feedback, Facebook likes, and a dozen fan tattoos.

On April Fool’s Day 2013, Razer presented fans with a black and green toaster that prints the brand’s logo on bread. After fans reacted positively and asked for it to become a reality, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan promised to make it happen if a Facebook fan page received 1M likes.

The page received only 44K likes to date, but that was close enough, according to Tan.

“Alright—I didn’t think these guys were going to make it—but they did,” Tan posted on Facebook. “It was to hit 1M likes and with each Razer Toaster tattoo being equivalent to 100K likes each….and they now have 12 Razer Toaster tattoos. Well…what can I say. I’ve just officially liked their page—and I’m going to put together my team of designers and engineers. It will take a few years—but I’ll be sure to share the progress—and make it a community affair.”

Other brands have used April Fool’s Day and similar pranks to test the market for real products or services.

ThinkGeek, a consumers products site acquired by GameStop in 2015, makes several April Fool’s Day products into reality ranging from a Star Wars tauntaun sleeping bag to iCADE, a tabletop arcade cabinet that fits an iPad inside.

KFC recently launched a series of IndieGoGo pages for strange products such as a hot tub that looks like a bucket of chicken and an ice show about Colonel Sanders. The company said that if enough money was raised, the products would become a reality.

As for Razer, the toaster doesn’t necessarily signal the beginning of a tradition. There is another unofficial fan page on Facebook demanding Razer home products such as a refrigerator and security system that blinds intruders with RGB lighting.

“Guys. I don’t know what you guys are up to but this isn’t going to happen. Ever,” Tan replied.

As an endemic sponsor, Razer has been active in the esports scene for many years. Recent partnerships include a sponsorship deal with Dota 2 Database-Link-e1521645463907 team The Alliance Database-Link-e1521645463907, collaborating with Tencent Database-Link-e1521645463907 on mobile hardware and software optimization, and a partnership deal with SN Gaming (SNG).
