PS5 launch games prices rise to £70 for Demon’s Souls and Destruction AllStars

The console may have been cheaper than many expected but Sony is asking an outrageous price for some of its first party exclusive games.

Just when the PlayStation 5 was beginning to look like a bit of a bargain, Sony has revealed that some of its games will be even more expensive than expected, at up to £70 for even just ordinary titles.

Having the PlayStation 5 costs £450, the same as the Xbox Series X, is a much better price than many feared, but that doesn’t tell the whole story when it comes to the cost of the next gen.

Third party publishers such as 2K and Activision have already hiked the price of big name games like Call Of Duty and NBA 2K to £65 but now Sony has gone a step further and is charging £70 for theirs.

PS5 launch day first party games

  • Astro’s Playroom – pre-installed on PS5
  • Demon’s Souls – £69.99
  • Destruction AllStars – £69.99
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – £51.99
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition – £69.99
  • Sackboy A Big Adventure – £59.99

Currently big name third party titles, such as Call Of Duty and FIFA, cost £59.99 on the PlayStation 4. So while a jump to £65 for the same sort of games was the last thing anyone wanted it was at least a relatively small step up.

But first party PlayStation 4 titles, such as the recently released The Last Of Us Part 2 and Ghost Of Tsushima cost no more than £54.99, so suddenly shooting up to £69.99 is pretty shocking.

What’s particularly bizarre is that this includes brand new IP Destruction AllStars, which as an unknown quantity is already going to be a hard sell, and Demon’s Souls – a remake of game that, while extremely good, is also extremely niche.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales at £51.99 sounds a bit more reasonable but it’s been compared multiple times to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, in terms of length, and that game only lasted around eight hours and cost £29.99 at launch.

Why Sackboy A Big Adventure is cheaper than the rest is unclear but at £59.99 it’s still more expensive than any current gen PlayStation 4 exclusive.

Naturally, Sony didn’t announce any of this during the PlayStation 5 showcase but they also didn’t mention that Miles Morales, Sackboy, and Horizon Forbidden West are coming to PlayStation 4 as well – an unexpected U-turn on Sony’s previous next gen-only policy.

It also begs the question of how much will those versions cost? The same as the PlayStation 5 or standard current gen prices?

This is also all going to play into Microsoft’s hands as they’ve already positioned the Xbox as being the best value for money console, especially given the Game Pass service that offers so many games for a very modestly priced subscription.

Despite a positive reaction to the showcase Sony has suddenly got a lot of damage control to undergo, especially as the prices for PlayStation 5 peripherals are not exactly on the cheap side either.

  • DualSense wireless controller – £59.99
  • PULSE 3D wireless headset – £89.99
  • HD Camera – £49.99
  • Media Remote – £24.99
  • DualSense charging station – £24.99
