The 63-year-old says he feels “lucky to be alive” after a suspected arson attack on his London constituency office in December.

And while he accepted that some abuse was “par for the course” for an MP, he added: “You shouldn’t really have to think, am I going to survive the day?”

In 2022, it emerged that terrorist Ali Harbi Ali visited Mr Freer’s constituency office a month before he murdered Essex MP David Amess in October 2021.

Last night, Mr Freer said increasing threats have made his husband Angelo nervous, particularly following the attack on his office.

He told the Daily Mail: “Obviously your husband or your family’s views have to carry a lot of weight.

“And when someone worries that, are you going to come home at night? – you have to take that seriously.”
