Princess Jasmine Will Have 10 New Costumes in the Live-Action "Aladdin"

If I told you to close your eyes and imagine Princess Jasmine from Aladdin, you’d probably be envisioning her signature turquoise crop top and matching pants — not to mention her tiger sidekick Rajah — from Disney’s 1992 animated film. But Naomi Scott’s version of the iconic princess will look a little different in the upcoming live-action film.

According to both Naomi and costume designer Michael Wilkinson, Jasmine will be seen in ten brand-new outfits — in addition to her classic shimmering blue ensemble, of course. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Naomi explained that the main theme within Jasmine’s wardrobe is her ever-present tug-of-war between structure and freedom. “If she’s wearing something that’s structured and beautiful, it can’t just be the sake of it looking great, it needs to be connected to the story,” the actor added.

Wilkinson agreed, telling EW that creating Jasmine’s costumes provided an opportunity to reveal the many layers behind the royal character’s personality. “It was wonderful to explore who Jasmine really was and be able to express that through her many costumes in the film,” he said.

From the photos published by EW, it’s clear that we will see an array of magical colors in Jasmine’s refreshed wardrobe, including a bright pink corset gown with turquoise and gold embellishments, a pumpkin-colored dress with sheer sleeves and green embroidery, and a dazzling coral gown with a corset bodice, gold patterns, and magenta accents. (Don’t worry; the turquoise outfit will get a magical moment all of its own.) This is definitely not the Jasmine we remember — but we are certainly here for “a whole new world” of fashion inspiration.

Aladdin also stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, and Will Smith as the (very blue) genie. Get ready to sail to Agrabah on a magic carpet ride of your own when the film hits cinemas later this May.
