PowerA’s MOGA XP5-X Plus could be the ultimate Android controller

The MOGA XP5-X Plus is the latest in a long line of Bluetooth-powered controllers for Android smartphones, with the aim of bringing the console gaming experience to the mobile. The games are getting there, with AAA games like PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile and Ark: Survival Evolved all available to download right now, but touchscreen controls aren’t the best method of input, and accessory manufacturers know it.

So, why is the MOGA XP5-X Plus so interesting? Unlike many other smartphone controllers, PowerA’s controller is officially licensed for Xbox, allowing the controller to sport the same design as Microsoft’s console, complete with Xbox branding and bright green accents, along with an adjustable clip to attach your smartphone to.

The Xbox branding seemed odd when it initially appeared on the PowerA website, but all was made clear during Samsung Unpacked the following day. Samsung revealed a partnership with Microsoft, bringing the company’s XCloud game streaming service to Samsung devices including the Galaxy Note 20 Series, along with Game Pass Ultimate. The idea is that you’ll be able to play one of 100 supported Game Pass Ultimate games via your Samsung smartphone no matter where you are, as long as you’ve got an active internet connection.

Of course, you could use a third-party controller, but only an official Xbox controller – or a Licensed for Xbox controller – will offer the correct keymapping. What happens if your third-party controller doesn’t have an Xbox button? Yeah, things can get pretty frustrating, pretty quickly.

Interestingly, the XP5-X Plus offers an additional two buttons, located on the grips of the controller, to provide extra functionality when gaming on-the-go, although if/how these buttons are customised is yet to be seen. The good news is that the 3000mAh battery should keep the controller going for quite some time before needing a top-up via USB-C.

The MOGA XP5-X Plus will be available to buy from September for $69.99 (UK pricing TBC) with pre-orders live at PowerA right now, and those looking to pre-order the Galaxy Note 20 Series ahead of launch can pick up a Game Pack for free, comprised of the MOGA controller, a three-month subscription to Game Pass Ultimate and a wireless charging stand too.
