Your phone has more harmful bacteria on it than a public toilet

Because there is not a safe way to clean a smartphone, it can build up 18 times more harmful bacteria than a public toilet.

Now, a firm has launched a device that kills 99.9 percent of common household germs without using water.

Called PhoneSoap, this technology uses UV-C light to sanitize and charges the phone while it is being cleaned.

Because smartphones are riddled with invisible bacteria, experts warn that we are more likely to get sick from handling the device than touching anything in a public bathroom.

The smartphone is also kept warm by the battery, which means the bacteria is constantly multiplying – that’s where PhoneSoap comes in.

This UV-C light effectively destroys nucleic acids and breaks apart bacteria DNA. With their DNA broken, bacteria can’t function or reproduce, and the organisms die.

‘In nature, the UV-C light that causes this germicidal effect is harmful to our eyes but is blocked by Earth’s atmosphere,’ the firm shared on its website.’
